Conaway became a star after appearing first on Grease, one of the most successful musicals of all time, and then in the comedy series, Taxi. He also had a recurring role in the TV show, Babylon 5. He developed a substance abuse problem, which he tried to overcome a number of times by going to rehab. He even made his struggle public by attending Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew. However, he always relapsed, falling back to using drugs and alcohol. His addiction killed him in 2011.
