‘The Great Storm’ of 1987 remains a vivid memory for those who witnessed its fury. With winds reaching 115 mph, this destructive tempest uprooted trees and damaged countless buildings, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. Approximately 18 lives were lost, and a staggering 15 million trees were destroyed.
Remarkably, the storm’s significance was heightened by a caller’s prescient warning to the BBC. On October 15, 1987, a concerned woman phoned in, expressing her worries about an impending storm. Her apprehensions were casually dismissed by the weatherman of the time, Michael Fish, who never anticipated the severity of the impending catastrophe.
