Dank der Zusicherung der Richterin, dass sie keine Konsequenzen zu befürchten hatte, konnte Olive endlich ihre wahren Gefühle offenbaren. Ihre Entscheidung hatte komplexe Gründe. Trotz ihres tiefen Wunsches nach einer Familie hegte sie weiterhin die Hoffnung, dass ihre leiblichen Eltern eines Tages zurückkehren würden, um sie zu sich zu nehmen.
In ihrem jungen Alter verstand sie nicht vollständig die Situation, aber sie wollte die Möglichkeit offenhalten, zu ihren leiblichen Eltern zu kommen. Diese Option stünde nach einer Adoption nicht mehr offen. Daher wäre sie erst bereit, einer Adoption zuzustimmen, wenn alle Hoffnung auf ein Wiedersehen mit ihren leiblichen Eltern erloschen wäre.
