Ihre Songs Midnight Train to Georgia und That’s What Friends Are For waren die Nummer eins in Billboard Hot 100. 1989 nahm sie für das Hames Bond, License to Kill-Titellied auf. Die Zeitschrift Rolling Stone nannte Gladys als einen der 100 größten Sänger aller Zeiten.
