Boys Don’t Cry sah Hilary Swank in einen Transgender-Mann verwandeln, und sie hat die Rolle übernommen. Swank schnitt zuerst ihr schönes langes Haar im Friseursalon ab, aber es stellte sich heraus, dass es nicht so einfach war, da viele Friseursalons sie wegschickten, weil sie einfach nicht den Kopf darüber zerbrechen konnten, warum sie so einen Zug machen wollte. Danach benahm sich die Schauspielerin wie ein Junge, um zu sehen, ob sie vor Beginn der Dreharbeiten einen durchgehen konnte. Die Schauspielerin war zumindest nicht mit Schichten und Schichten von Make-up geplagt, da sie ein Mann spielte.
