Als Regisseur hat er Filme wie Ordinary People und A River Runs Through It gedreht. Robert war von 1958 bis 1985 mit Lola Van Wagenen verheiratet, aber sie beschlossen, sich zu trennen, und ernannten einen Scheidungsanwalt, der die Formalitäten auch nach fast drei Jahrzehnten Zusammenbleiben erledigte. Amy ist ihr jüngstes Kind und hat sich als Produzentin, Regisseurin und Schauspielerin etabliert.
