Spencer se hizo con un Premio Emmy por su fabulosa interpretación. Además, apareció en títulos como Law & Order, Miami Vice y El negociador. Murió de un ataque al corazón el 16 de diciembre de 2005, apenas 4 días antes de cumplir 59 años. Para ese entonces, apenas se habían grabado dos episodios de la última temporada de El ala oeste de la Casa Blanca, su muerte obligó a la reescritura del guion de la serie.
