Rare Photos From The History Books You Have to See to Believe
Satchmo and the Sphinx
This amazing photo was taken in 1961 by photojournalists from the New York Times. It shows legendary jazz musician Louis Armstrong serenading his wife while on tour in Egypt, and the reason for them being there is as intriguing as the photo itself.

In the Cold War, the USA was keen to promote the American way of life, and they felt that by exporting jazz music, they could get various cultures around the world on their side. Armstrong famously refused to partake in any political talks, though, claiming his trumpet was the only form of communication he was comfortable with.
